Check in before you train or play

Writer: Mary PitmanMary Pitman

This article highlights one of the key components of the Fitness Alliance International philosophy and the Whole Player Model - self-awareness

Before every session, every athlete, whether in the gym, on the court, pool, wherever, rate themselves on a scale of 1-10 for their physical, mental and emotional level. We all know that each affects the others and by using these ratings, we can know where to target training intensity.

Is the athlete mentally distracted? Don't make them think too hard with new movement patterns

Are they emotionally drained? Make it funner

Did they arrive at training physically pumped and mentally keen (rare, but it happens)? Let's go!

Check in with yourself each day, maybe a few times and see what you learn
