The Pillars of the Whole Player Model (through the eyes of lifestyle medicine)

Presentation by Dr Greg Fitzgerald and Dr Gavin Levy

Dr Greg starts with a story of the Somersault Restaurant which highlights

  • The importance of a core group of friends (Relationships)

  • Values and priorities changing over time (Mindset)

  • The menu selection (Nutrition)

  • Where and when the friends planned to meet (Self-management)

He then carries on to a number of relationships people are exposed to frequently, these being the relationship with self (mindset), the relationship with food (nutrition and mindset) and the relationship to their schedule (Self-management and recovery) and included a section on Stillness, Silence, Solitude and Simplicity in life

Gavin Levy, a Lifestyle Medicine professional discusses the NEED for an individual approach to medicine (which doesn't and probably shouldn't always involve medication) and also speaks heavily on nutrition, recovery (including decreasing intense activity) and supportive networks or relationships.

Improved recovery alone (not always just sleep) improves nutrition and mindset (mood, mental attention). He also touched on recovery of the gut lining between meals and it's importance for the effects of the gut microbiome.
